Museum lesson: 30 zlotys Museum traditions in Skocz?w goes back to the beginning of the 20th century. The first museum was opened in 1913 in the Skocz?w castle. It was a private Beskidy museum founded by Karol Prays from Skocz?w. There were natural, archaeological and geological exhibits. In 1918 the museum was closed because of the lack of space and some damages of the exhibits during the 1st World War. Some exhibits were sold or given to the museum in Cieszyn. In December 1964 Biographical Museum concerning life and work of the writer Gustaw Morcinek (who lived in Skocz?w since 1919) was opened in his villa at 2 Le?na Street. His flat, library, souvenirs and correspondence was open to the public. The museum was managed by Ms Waleria Kuglin, with the essential supervision of the museum in Cieszyn. In 1974 after Ms Kuglin’s death the museum was closed and some of the exhibits were sent to the Cieszyn museum.
In 1982, thanks to the decision of the Bielski Voivode, Gustaw Morcinek Museum in Skocz?w started to exist and was opened on 20th December 1986 at 5 Fabryczna Street after the capital repair of the monumental tenement-house with the 15th century basement and the rococo facade dated from 1793. The constant exhibition deals with the history of Cieszyn Land – from the Stone Age until the early Middle Ages with the particular emphasis on a medieval castle ( 7th – 9th century) in Mi?dzy?wieć - treated as the primary Skocz?w. Some of the archaeological exhibits comes from the collection of Karol Praus and the whole exhibition is situated in a stylish basement. Three rooms on the first floor are dedicated to Gustaw Morcinek and show his life and work. Most of the presented documents, photographs and books were taken from the Biographical Museum. In the former chapel you can see the writer’s study with his desk, his type-writer and bookcases. In the front room there are presented archival materials of the history of Skocz?w like duke’s, emperor’s and municipal documents, coins from the old duke’s mint of Skocz?w, precious maps and plans and other records of the past. Upstairs you can visit an exhibition of Cieszyn craft, mainly these branches which were well - developed in this region: tanning, hat-making, honey-cake making, pottery, stringed musical instruments making, gunsmithing, goldsmithing, clock and watch-making and others. Tools, craft products and objects connected with craft traditions ( like flags, trade counters, documents) are shown as well. Another attraction is a monumental fire-engine called „damfula” from 1907 which can be seen in the garden at the back of the museum.
Every year temporary exhibitions are organised, which are connected with the history and traditions of the region, which present worthy people and their work and widen the topics of the permanent exhibitions. The museum offers guiding you around the exhibitions (for groups) and museum lessons (only by appointment). The topics of the lessons (within a so called „regional path”) depends on the needs of the school, are connected with the themes realized by the museum and deal mainly with the history of Cieszyn Land, the beginnings of Skocz?w, legends of its origin, Cieszyn craft, the history of the Cieszyn duchy as well as the life and work of Gustaw Morcinek.
The museum prepared two routes for tourists: Morcinek route and Sarkander route. You can order a guide for both of the routes. We can offer also watching films about Gustaw Morcinek, St. Jan sarkander, history of Skocz?w, Judes and the Cieszyn regional costume.
You can also use the library and archival collections of the museum for scientific studies and publicistic works. Students from different universities serve their apprenticeship here and students from the Silesian University have classes of regionalism and Silesian dialect in the museum.
The board of the Association of Gustaw Morcinek works in the museum. Scientific sessions, competitions and celebrating anniversaries connected with Morcinek are organized here. Since 1990 there was the editorial office of a biweekly "Gazeta Skoczowska", and since 1993 Kalendarze Skoczowskie (Skocz?w Calendars) have been published.
Since 1993 Klub Propozycji (Proposition Club) has been active, which every two months organizes meetings with interesting people and on exciting topics. The publicist, editorial and educational activity enables to spread the knowledge of the region and its people. A few times in a year poetic-musical evenings, musical concerts and promotions of usually local publications take place. The museum cooperates with universities, museums, libraries and other cultural institutions in Poland and in foreign countries. On Mondays and on the days following national holidays – the museum is closed.
